Sterling Engineering Attends Quarterly Conference Run with Greater O'Hare Association
"Achieve your dreams by setting your goals!" This was the topic of the discussion at the Young Professionals Group sponsored by the GOA and held at the Elk Grove Bank and Trust on April 10, 2012.
Thomas Varghese, the President of eBiz Universe, spoke about the importance of goal setting in personal and in professional life. The key principle of the presentation was on SMART planning tips, SMART being an acronym for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant and Timely. Varghese's SMART plan explains that no goal, nor dream or purpose in life, is truly out of reach as long as we are able to systematically and realistically break down larger dreams and goals into small "baby steps. These baby steps allow goals and dreams to be attained deliberately and over the course of time in chunks. This continues to drive and motivate over a period of time rather than aiming for an unattainable goal and becoming discouraged when it doesn't come to fruition quickly.
Overall, the event was beneficial because it provided a concise expository on the importance of setting goals- specific, short to long-term and attainable/reasonable for achieving motivation and success in personal and business settings. The event also allowed for networking with other young professionals running the gamut from staffing to human resources to management to entrepreneurial individuals.

Sterling Engineering Attends University of Marquette Reverse Career Fair
On February 7, 2012 Paul Russo and Whitney Brennan attended the Marquette Reverse Career Fair with over 35 student organizations and over 50 employers attending. Unlike a typical career fair, the students were responsible for setting up booths while the recruiters would walk through the ballroom and introduce themselves. There were organizations from Anthropology Club to R.O.T.C. to Midnight Run. All of these student organizations had booths set up with information about themselves: from handouts to pens to actual pictures of them in action. (At the end of the Career Fair there was a vote for the student organization that was most prepared, both verbally, along with the appearance of their booth.)
Paul and Whitney were able to walk from booth to booth introducing themselves and what Sterling Engineering represents. In return, they were able to gain knowledge about each of the different clubs and how they positively impact other students, the University, and the community. This was a great way for student leaders to showcase their professional skills and the values and skills they have gained as a direct result in participating in student organizations at Marquette University.
Registering for The Reverse Career Fair was quick and easy online and open to employers who registered in time, as registration was limited. With many Marquette Alumni working at Sterling Engineering, including Paul Russo, Todd Dumbrowski, and Founder Dan Casey, Sterling Engineering is trying to become as involved as possible in extracurricular activities put on by the University.
Paul and Whitney were fortunate to be able to meet both the Engineering Sorority (Alpha Omega Epsilon) and the Engineering Fraternity (Sigma Phi Delta).
While meeting with the Alpha Omega Epsilon Sorority, they were able to learn more about each of the girls present. They were also able to gain insight about how the School of Engineering is set up (regarding floor levels and classrooms) along with the co-ops that the sorority is currently participating in.
Paul and Whitney then made their way to the opposite end of the ballroom to introduce themselves to the Sigma Phi Delta Fraternity. There were several of the fraternity brothers participating. They discussed exactly how Sterling Engineering operates along with positions currently available. The brothers from Sigma Phi Delta were able to show their house and discuss their engineering fields of study.
The Marquette Reverse Career fair had an interesting spin and allowed all to have a little fun while networking with Marquette Student Organizations.

Sterling Engineering Sponsors the FIRST LEGO League
The FIRST LEGO League Illinois State Championship was help January 21-22, 2012 in Arlington Heights, IL where Sterling Engineering sponsored a First LEGO League Team.
The purpose of the First LEGO League (FLL) is to get 9 – 14 year olds revved-up regarding science and technology in the process of teaching employment and life skills. The children do the work; programming an autonomous LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot set to score points on a themed playing surface; create innovative solutions to themed problems in the Project Challenge; and finally demonstrate FLL's core values in an impromptu teamwork challenge.
Every September, FLL releases a challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Each challenge has three parts: the robot game, the project, and the FLL core values. Teams of up to ten children, with one adult coach, participate in the challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (robot game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (project), all guided by the FLL core values.
Past challenges have been based on topics such as nanotechnology, climate, quality of life for the handicapped population, and transportation. By designing challenges around such topics, participants are exposed to potential career paths within a chosen challenge topic, in addition to solidifying the STEM principles that naturally come from participating in a robotics program. Team members also learn valuable life and employment skills which will benefit them no matter which career path they choose.
This is a high-energy event that generates high interest in technical fields and has, in fact, produced several commercially viable "real-life" solutions.
If you have a child who may be interested or if you might be interested in coaching a team, we invite you to contact Ron Sandy at 630-993-3402 or by email at rsandy@sterling-engineering.com for more information.

The James Dyson Foundation Launches in America
On May 5, 2011 James Dyson hosted a design workshop for young students in Chicago to mark the launch of the James Dyson Foundation in the US. The workshop was held at Sir Miles Davis Academy, one of few schools in Chicago that offers engineering curriculum to students from Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Along with James Dyson, engineering mentors worked with students to think "beyond the everyday." Challenged to "redesign an everyday machine that frustrates you", middle schoolers from Chicago Public Schools thought creatively, sketched, and modeled their designs at Sir Miles Davis Academy's "invention gym."
Brains were given a workout as the James Dyson Foundation began its mission to encourage more American students to become future engineers and inventors. Prototypes from Dyson and local companies were also on display.
James Dyson said: "Young people have an innate inventive streak. They're not stifled by experience – they take risks and are excellent problem-solvers. They fail everyday – exactly the making of a great engineer. We're encouraging children to use their hands and heads, make mistakes and learn."
For the launch, the Foundation was joined by local and national organizations to bring engineering to life for the students. Children learned about 3D printing with tools from Argonne National Laboratories, took an in depth look at skin cells with design firm, IDEO, and discovered how robots are made with FIRST robotics.
Chicago education leaders were also in attendance, including President of Chicago Board of Education Mary Richardson-Lowry, Deputy CEO of External Affairs and Partnerships for CPS Barbara Lumpkin, along with influential STEM advocates Jon Dudas, President of FIRST Robotics and Tony Jones, President of the School of the Art Institute (and the Foundation's chairman).
Initially, the Foundation will concentrate its efforts in Chicago, working with Chicago Public Schools to establish 20 after school engineering clubs. The Foundation will also offer our Education Box, a reverse engineering resource, to Chicago schools with teacher development. The engineering clubs and Education Box will launch in the 2011/2012 school year followed shortly by teacher training tools and university scholarships.
A group from Sterling Engineering attended the official launch party for the Dyson Foundation in support of the mission to promote engineering as a career choice for young students. The last decade has seen a steep decline in enrollment in this field both in colleges as well as technical schools the impact of which is being strongly felt in today's job market by most manufacturing companies.
As the manufacturing sector continues to expand for the 24th consecutive month, the search for talent is already proving challenging in many areas from Quality Engineers to Tool + Dye expertise. As this program is already showing very positive results within the UK educational system, Sterling is very pleased to support the Dyson Foundation in their efforts with Chicago Public Schools.
