FIRST Lego LeagueThe FIRST LEGO League Illinois State Championship was help January 21-22, 2012 in Arlington Heights, IL where Sterling Engineering sponsored a First LEGO League Team.

The purpose of the First LEGO League (FLL) is to get 9 – 14 year olds revved-up regarding science and technology in the process of teaching employment and life skills. The children do the work; programming an autonomous LEGO® MINDSTORMS® robot set to score points on a themed playing surface; create innovative solutions to themed problems in the Project Challenge; and finally demonstrate FLL’s core values in an impromptu teamwork challenge.

Every September, FLL releases a challenge, which is based on a real-world scientific topic. Each challenge has three parts: the robot game, the project, and the FLL core values. Teams of up to ten children, with one adult coach, participate in the challenge by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (robot game), developing a solution to a problem they have identified (project), all guided by the FLL core values.

Past challenges have been based on topics such as nanotechnology, climate, quality of life for the handicapped population, and transportation. By designing challenges around such topics, participants are exposed to potential career paths within a chosen challenge topic, in addition to solidifying the STEM principles that naturally come from participating in a robotics program. Team members also learn valuable life and employment skills which will benefit them no matter which career path they choose. This is a high-energy event that generates high interest in technical fields and has, in fact, produced several commercially viable “real-life” solutions.

If you have a child who may be interested or if you might be interested in coaching a team, we invite you to contact Ron Sandy at 630-993-3402 or by email at rsandy@sterling-engineering.com for more information.
