Sterling Engineering had the honor of attending the 2014 Girl Power Luncheon at the Hilton Chicago on April 9, 2014. This event celebrates the achievements and accomplishments of an outstanding group of young women who currently attend the Young Women’s Leadership Charter School of Chicago (YWLCS), Chicago’s only public school for girls. YWLCS focuses on empowering and transforming young urban women from 7th to 12th grade through innovative education programs and personalized support. With a highly developed college preparatory program that is centered around STEM education (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math), YWLCS prepares young girls for success by fostering a “whole girl” approach to education by not only emphasizing academic excellence but also stressing the importance of leadership skills, integrity, professionalism, and community.
The room was buzzing with young, talented, driven young women embarking on a bright future while Sterling Engineering and the hundreds of other attendees proudly celebrated an outstanding 100% college acceptance rate for YWLCS’ class of 2014. Awards were presented to Linda Johnson Rice, Chairman of the Johnson Publishing Company, for her leadership and accomplishments and also to Sunny Fischer, Former Executive Director of the Richard. H. Driehaus Foundation, for her impact on Chicago’s philanthropic community. The students also had a chance to present recent science, engineering, math, and art projects that they had worked on throughout the year in addition to sharing their personal experiences as YWLCS students.
