viaOn April 22, 2014, Sterling Engineering employees attended the Valley Industrial Association’s 2014 Spring Luncheon.  Adam Pollet, the Director of Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity was the speaker at the event.  He spoke about how the DCEO is encouraging economic development in IL. Adam said they are focusing on 5 tools:

1)      Marketing & Promoting the State (updated website, marketing material, social media, etc)

2)     Increase access to capital (investment needed to have return)

3)     Workforce Training (using programs like the Employer Training Investment Program –ETIP, and working to improve the education system to have a curriculum that matches demand, etc)

4)     Target Investment to Infrastructure in areas where our business say we need it

5)     Technical Assistance

Illinois has made strides in the right direction, but still has a long way to go. “It is important to look at where we are and where we have come from.” Though our unemployment is now 8.4%, that’s great improvement from our peak of 11% He mentioned how Chicago has won the opportunity to be the home for the Digital Manufacturing and Design Institute and how this will also help attract more business to IL and continue to provide a value add to our current local manufacturers for the whole state.
