Earth Day is an opportunity to be mindful of the impact manufacturing and individuals have on the environment. In 2016 alone, cities around the globe produced over 2 billion tons of waste. That number is projected to reach 3.5 billion tons by 2050. While sustainability has been a target of packaging for years, plastic packaging makes up nearly half of all plastic waste with less than 1/5 getting recycled. The Alliance to End Plastic Waste partners with companies looking to redesign or making changes to their existing packaging or implementing newer more sustainable materials. Within the alliance there are more than 355 projects underway in 40 countries to combat #Oceanplasticwaste. That’s good news for consumers, who are becoming increasingly environmentally conscious and are attracted to companies who are making sustainability a priority in their packaging and supply chain. It is imperative for all enterprises to focus on reducing their carbon footprint while ideally engaging in efforts to offset their current footprint.
While it can be costly to reduce waste at an organizational level, individuals can take steps to reduce their impact as well. Being more aware of what you buy and how you use it is a preliminary step to becoming more environmentally mindful. Sterling recently participated in an office wide electronics recycling day. Most electronics that would be destined for landfill contain valuable materials that can be recycled and reused for new products. On this Earth Day, consider one change you can make in your daily life to reduce your carbon footprint.
