Meet Our Administrative Lead – Melissa Kautenberger
This month we are honored to feature Melissa Kautenberger. Melissa just celebrated her 14-year anniversary with Sterling. She joined our company after graduating from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, MI. Today, she is our Administrative Lead and she is instrumental in keeping our organization running smoothly!
Tell us, Melissa, what brought you to Sterling 14 years ago?
I found Sterling through my father. He was at a trade show talking with Sterling’s president, Rama, and he mentioned that he had a daughter fresh out of college trying to find a job. I interviewed and was hired on as a researcher in October of 2006.
14 years is a long time. What are the different roles you’ve held at Sterling?
I was hired as a recruiting researcher and although the normal progression would have been to become a recruiter, I actually began assisting with our marketing efforts. I assisted with postings jobs, our events (external and internal), and other promotional tasks. I helped our accounting and administrative staff as well. I then supported the team on one of our biggest clients, and after that, I moved full time into an administrative operations role.
What is your job at Sterling today?
Today I’m the Administrative Lead within Sterling. I work for our Operations Manager, Kevin Bass. He truly cares for my success and I find that many managers at Sterling do as well, which makes for a great work environment. To sum up my career path within Sterling I have learned the ropes and love the administrative role. I perform day-to-day admin responsibilities such as: placements, terminations, conversions, new hire onboarding, drug/background screenings, confirmations, and agreements. You can say process, procedure, and organization are the name of my game. I am very detail oriented and that works extremely well in my role.
What is a typical day like for you?
A typical day for me can be summed up as ‘busy.’ Sterling has been extremely busy with placements, even during the pandemic. I work hand in hand with our accounting team and I also support our sales & recruiting teams and management for other administrative projects. My day consists of requesting, receiving, auditing, and executing information to make workflow easier for everyone!
Being in a support role I rely on many departments and clients to provide me with all the required information to move certain tasks along. I make sure that we follow our clients’ policies and requirements, as well as our own.
What do you love about your job?
I enjoy the work I perform. It’s fast-paced and everything I receive has an almost immediate deadline. I truly am fond of my coworkers … such a good group of people through and through. I have formed relationships with each coworker and am honored to have made life-long friendships. So many would gladly help me with anything outside of work if asked. I honestly enjoy my time spent with them.
Sterling is an honorable and loyal company to work for. I believe it has good core values and I am proud to be part of it. It feels wonderful to be a part of something so successful.
What are your thoughts about Sterling’s Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP)?
Since I’m vested, I now have part ownership and/or shares of Sterling Staffing, Inc. Knowing this, I am absolutely more interested in decisions made to better the company and its growth. It’s nice to know that changes I make and my contributions make a difference.
Thank you, Melissa, for all of your hard work and all that you do. One last question, just for fun: would you rather make a snowman or a snow angel?
Absolutely taking the “Frozen” route here and I would build a snowman! A snow angel is less work and less rewarding. Plus, how do you get up off the ground without ruining it?! With a snowman you can give personality, and everyone can see/enjoy your artwork!
